Memorial Design

Listen, Respect, Dynamic Timeless Designs

The design of a memorial is a particular challenge because most committees know who and what they want to recognize but not always how to memorialize their mission. Our job is to listen, incorporate aspects of heritage, symbolism and protocol, and to develop a dynamic and timeless design approach to recognize feelings of respect and emotion while keeping with tight budget parameters. Many aspects of a memorial include references to culture, tradition and symbolism. The design of a memorial, based on these established design criteria, and the integration of the memorial into the environment is what BWR does best. Many memorials are designed as tools of history and learning as well as being symbolic and respectful. For example, the Korean War Veterans Memorial at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City will include a contemporary physical and symbolic reference to and structure of the “Bridge of Freedom’ across the 38th parallel, where freedom for many POW’s took place in 1953.

BWR has one of the nation’s leading architectural memorial designers. Dan Sutton and his staff of architects and landscape architects work together with their clients designing beautiful, meaningful and long-lasting memorials.
